First the bad news: you'll have to wait till next year to find out just how many nods Urinetown: The Musical will get in the sixth annual Critic's Choice Awards. But the good news is, the results are now in for year five, covering the 2005/06 theatre season. (And just in time to start planning for the upcoming M Awards!) Yep, whether it was made in Victoria or a visiting touring production, if a play hit the boards here between September 2005 and the end of the Fringe 2006, it was officially in the running for our annual theatre critics round-up.

Once again, myself, Adrian Chamberlain of the Times Colonist and Robert Mitchell of CBC's On The Island kept close tabs on who was doing what and, with the help of some of Monday's freelance theatre critics, boiled it all down into the following highlights. (And yes, even though Mitchell has now passed along his critical duties, he was still in the hot seat for last year's season.) What were we looking for when it came to the nominees and the winners? The exceptional, the excellent, the extraordinary and, in the case of the "Thank God They Were Comps" category, the truly unforgettable. As always, there were far more names on the original nominee list than could be included here and, as was the case with certain large productions, it was often difficult to single one person out. But if one thing was made clear yet again this past year, it was that Victoria is overflowing with theatrical talent - both established and emerging. Congratulations to all, winners and nominees alike. And gosh, after five years, you'd think we'd have come up with a statuette or something to give the winners. Maybe next year...
